![]() What we need to remember is that we shouldn’t be fearless about our situations because it can be inauthentic to not acknowledge the concerns around us. This is understandable for all the change we’ve experienced. There’s a fear that we may not be able to provide what our students, family, and community need. Conversely, when you’re nervous about speaking in front a crowd of your peers and do it anyway, that’s courageous.Įvery day of 2020 seems to push us deeper into areas where we need to summon strength that we may not be sure we’ll find. They may be oblivious of the perils around them. Recently though, I learned about a significant difference between them and in 2020, it’s giving me a powerful framing for what many of us are experiencing.įearless is defined as the absence of fear.Ĭourageous involves doing something despite feeling fear.Īs an example, very young children are often fearless. Leaders give others hope, encouragement and determination.I’ve often heard the words “fearless” and “courageous” used interchangeably. Leadership is not about power or position… Everyone can build on their own inner strengths to make better decisions for the benefit of all and to act on those decisions. Good citizenship in practice is understanding, appreciating and doing things that make life better for yourself and for others.” Citizenship means more than knowing how the government functions (authority). What makes a person brave is to stand up for what is right even when you are afraid because it’s the right thing to do. This is not the case! It is perfectly normal to be nervous or afraid in certain situations. This requires courage.īeing brave and having courage is often misunderstood as being fearless. ![]() If you see someone getting bullied by other children, or being left out at school, should you walk away and ignore it? Or should you stand up for what is right and help those in need? It can be difficult to do the right thing, especially when it means standing up and saying no to friends or classmates. Sometimes doing the right thing is not limited to what we are doing, but also what you are NOT doing. The more you practice integrity, the easier it will become. Integrity is knowing for yourself what is right and wrong, and following the rules because you know that’s the right thing to do. What is integrity and why is it important? Integrity is different from following the rules to avoid getting in trouble, or to impress your teacher. It can take courage to do the right thing. Other times, doing the right thing might not feel so easy. Sometimes doing the right thing is clear and simple. We often hear about how important it is to do the right thing, and make good decisions. ![]()
